Summary

High impedance electrodes do not improve external cardiac pacing outcomes. Low impedance electrodes, suitable for defibrillation, are effective for pacing, simplifying procedures with a single electrode set.

Background:

  • External cardiac pacing traditionally uses high impedance electrodes (> 500 Ω).
  • High impedance electrodes are unsuitable for defibrillation, which requires low impedance.
