    Background:

    • Antibody assays detect no cross-reactivity between egg white lysozyme and its S-carboxymethylated (CM-) derivative.
    • T lymphocyte studies indicate significant cross-reactivity between native and CM-lysozyme.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the immunological specificity of T lymphocytes towards native and modified lysozyme.
    • To assess the immune response to CM-lysozyme in genetically unresponsive mice.

    Main Methods:

    • Antisera from various animals were used to test for antibody cross-reactivity.
    • T lymphocyte responses were evaluated for cross-reactivity between lysozyme forms.
    • Mice genetically unresponsive to native lysozyme were tested for their response to CM-lysozyme.

    • No cross-reactivity was detected at the antibody level between native and CM-lysozyme.
