Summary

Transient vision loss (amaurosis fugax) in young patients is often benign and idiopathic. Extensive evaluations in four cases found no cause, with symptoms resolving spontaneously, indicating a favorable prognosis without intervention.

Corrigendum to "Immune-checkpoint inhibition in first-line treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer patients: Current status and future approaches" [Lung Cancer 106 (2017) 70-75].

Lung cancer (Amsterdam, Netherlands)·2018

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Neurology
  • Vascular Medicine

Background:

  • Amaurosis fugax in young individuals is typically linked to non-atherosclerotic causes like migraine or vasculitis.
  • Idiopathic cases, where no cause is identified, are common and usually self-limiting.

Observation:

  • Four young patients presented with transient episodes of amaurosis fugax.
  • Despite comprehensive investigations including clinical, laboratory, ultrasonographic, and angiographic studies, no underlying cause was identified.

Findings:

  • The observed cases represent idiopathic amaurosis fugax, characterized by the absence of identifiable causative factors.
  • All four patients experienced spontaneous resolution of their transient visual disturbances.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Idiopathic amaurosis fugax in young patients generally follows a benign course with a low risk of permanent visual deficits.
  • These findings suggest that extensive treatment may not be necessary for such cases, reducing healthcare burden and patient anxiety.
