Managing dobutamine infusions

Each year, over 400,000 new cases of congestive heart failure (CHF) are diagnosed. Dobutamine, a synthetic inotropic agent, is used to boost myocardial function. While in the past dobutamine has been administered to patients under close observation in critical-care units, this treatment is now considered safe and cost-effective for use with patients on general medical-surgical units and even in the home when strict monitoring guidelines are followed.
