Abstract:
Transmission of HIV infection by blood transfusion was first reported in 1982. By systematic blood testing of the donors the risk of transmission of HIV by blood transfusion has been diminished. In the USA the risk to be infected by HIV with blood that was tested negative is about 1/60.000. In Brazil this risk is much greater: it is believed that in São Paulo the HIV infection occurs in between 1/2500 and 1/15000 of transfusions.
