Representational systems in counselling

The theories of neuro-linguistic programming are becoming more popular in shaping the approaches of nurses to counselling. The use of one facet of these theories, primary representational systems, is explored here. Examining the case of an imaginary patient, the author shows how the primary representational systems of patients and health workers can create problems if in disharmony, and how a proper understanding can lead to increased empathy and more constructive dialogue.
