Summary

Echocardiographic contrast agent Albunex showed lower videodensity in the left heart than the right heart in healthy volunteers. This limits quantitative assessment of left heart echocontrast after intravenous injection due to gas diffusion and microsphere distribution effects.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Medical Imaging
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Echocardiography is a crucial diagnostic tool.
  • Ultrasound contrast agents enhance image quality.
  • Albunex is an established ultrasound contrast agent.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the videodensity of the left and right heart after intravenous Albunex injection.
  • To identify factors affecting echocontrast in the left heart.

Main Methods:

  • Intravenous injection of Albunex (0.01-0.04 mL/kg) in 10 healthy volunteers.
  • Measurement of videodensity in the left and right ventricles.
  • In vitro studies to analyze gas diffusion and microsphere distribution.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Left ventricle videodensity was consistently lower than right ventricle videodensity.
  • Gas diffusion and lung capillary sieving effect were identified as contributing factors.
  • In vitro findings corroborated clinical observations.

Conclusions:

  • Albunex administration results in differential videodensity between the left and right heart.
  • Quantitative assessment of left heart echocontrast is limited by physiological phenomena.
  • Further research may be needed to optimize contrast agent delivery and imaging protocols.
