Summary
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 infection is rarely associated with mycosis fungoides. However, HIV-1 patients without severe immunodeficiency may experience a slower, more typical course of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Immunology
- Dermatology
Background:
- Mycosis fungoides-type cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (MF-CTCL) is uncommon in human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection.
- Previously reported HIV-1-associated CTCL cases often involved CD8+ T-cell lymphomas, erythroderma, severe immunodeficiency, and rapid mortality.
- Chronic, typical patch-plaque MF-CTCL in HIV-1-infected individuals has not been documented.
