Chronic diffuse sclerosing osteomyelitis of the humerus: novel treatment with calcitonin

Abstract:
We describe a 51-year-old woman with a 20-year history of pain and swelling in her left upper arm. Radiographic appearance was suggestive of chronic osteomyelitis but confirmation necessitated surgical exploration. A diagnosis of sclerosing osteomyelitis was made on histology which responded poorly to the prolonged antibiotics. She subsequently made a dramatic symptomatic and radiological improvement after starting to take calcitonin, even in low dosage.
