Summary

Fibrin reaction after cataract surgery is more common in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) or exfoliation syndrome compared to diabetics without retinopathy. These conditions significantly increase the risk of this post-operative complication.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the incidence of fibrin reaction following extracapsular cataract surgery and posterior chamber IOL implantation.
  • To compare the occurrence of fibrin reaction in specific patient subgroups: diabetics without retinopathy, patients with prior primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) surgery, and those with exfoliation syndrome without glaucoma.

  • Patients with a history of primary open-angle glaucoma surgery or exfoliation syndrome face a significantly higher risk of post-operative fibrin reaction after cataract surgery.
  • Diabetic patients without retinopathy also have an increased risk compared to controls, but less so than the POAG and exfoliation syndrome groups.
  • These findings highlight the importance of considering pre-existing ocular conditions when assessing risks associated with cataract surgery.
