Summary

The Knowledge, Attitude, and Self-Efficacy Asthma Questionnaire (KASE-AQ) effectively measures asthma patient knowledge, attitudes, and self-efficacy. Interventions significantly improved these factors, with gains sustained at 3-month follow-up.

Area of Science:

  • Pulmonary Medicine
  • Behavioral Science
  • Health Psychology

Background:

  • Asthma management requires assessing patient knowledge, attitudes, and self-efficacy.
  • Existing tools may not comprehensively capture these crucial patient variables.
  • The Knowledge, Attitude, and Self-Efficacy Asthma Questionnaire (KASE-AQ) was developed to address this need.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce and validate the KASE-AQ for assessing asthma patients' knowledge, attitudes, and self-efficacy.
  • To evaluate the KASE-AQ's reliability and internal consistency.
  • To determine the questionnaire's ability to detect changes following an intervention.

Main Methods:

  • Development of the KASE-AQ, a paper-and-pencil instrument.
  • Reliability and internal consistency analyses.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Factor analysis to identify subscales (knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy).
  • Assessment of patient variables before and after an asthma education and self-management training intervention.
  • Main Results:

    • The KASE-AQ demonstrated reliability and internal consistency.
    • Factor analysis confirmed three distinct subscales: knowledge, attitude, and self-efficacy.
    • Both experimental and control groups showed significant improvements in all three variables post-intervention.
    • These improvements were maintained at a 3-month follow-up.

    Conclusions:

    • The KASE-AQ is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring key patient variables in asthma.
    • Asthma education and self-management training lead to significant, sustained improvements in patient knowledge, attitudes, and self-efficacy.
    • The KASE-AQ can effectively track changes in these variables, aiding in intervention evaluation.
