Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Microbiology

Background:

  • Vertebral osteomyelitis (VO) is a serious spinal infection.
  • Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis) is an uncommon cause of VO, usually linked to immunosuppression and a clear infection source.
  • This study focuses on a rare case of S. epidermidis VO in an otherwise healthy patient.

Observation:

  • A male patient presented with severe back pain but no overt signs of infection.
  • Imaging revealed destructive lesions in the thoracic vertebral bodies and a nearby soft tissue mass.
  • Multiple blood cultures confirmed S. epidermidis as the causative agent.

Findings:

  • The S. epidermidis isolates were consistent in their antibiotic resistance and biochemical characteristics.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The patient responded well to antistaphylococcal treatment.
  • Radiographic evidence showed vertebral healing and resolution of the soft tissue mass.
  • Implications:

    • This case expands the understanding of S. epidermidis VO, particularly in immunocompetent hosts.
    • It underscores the importance of considering rare pathogens even without typical risk factors.
    • Successful treatment highlights the efficacy of targeted antimicrobial therapy for S. epidermidis VO.
