Hypnotizability and facets of openness

Summary

Absorption, a key aspect of openness to experience, is strongly linked to hypnotizability. Other facets of openness, like intellectance and liberalism, do not significantly predict hypnotic susceptibility.

Background:

Absorption is considered a correlate of hypnotizability.
Openness to experience is a broad personality dimension within the
Big Five
structure, but it is heterogeneous.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the relationship between different facets of openness and hypnotizability.
To determine if intellectance and liberalism, in addition to absorption, improve the prediction of hypnotizability.

Main Methods:

651 subjects completed measures of absorption, intellectance, and liberalism.
Hypnotizability was assessed using the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility, Form A.

Main Results:

The three dimensions of openness (absorption, intellectance, liberalism) showed modest interrelationships.
Only absorption was significantly related to hypnotizability.
Adding intellectance and liberalism to absorption did not enhance the prediction of hypnotizability.

Conclusions:

The facets of openness are distinct, suggesting the
Big Five
structure may require expansion.
Absorption's link to hypnotizability may stem from shared imaginative involvement, not present in other openness facets.
