Summary
Pancreatic pseudocyst from trauma is rare. Surgical cysto-jejunostomy is an effective treatment for traumatic pancreatic pseudocysts when other methods fail.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Surgical Oncology
- Trauma Surgery
Background:
- Pancreatic pseudocysts are uncommon complications of blunt abdominal trauma.
- This study investigates the incidence and management of traumatic pancreatic pseudocysts.
Observation:
- Only 5 of 98 surgically treated pancreatic pseudocyst patients had a history of blunt abdominal trauma.
- Trauma ranged from slight to severe, with some cases presenting as pancreatitis.
- Diagnosis was primarily sonographic, with one case requiring intraoperative confirmation.
Findings:
- Continuous percutaneous suction was not feasible due to the time between trauma and pseudocyst presentation (3 months to 1 year).
- Cysto-jejunostomy with a Roux-en-Y loop was performed in all patients.
- All patients remained asymptomatic with no recurrence of pseudocyst formation during 1-10 year follow-up.
Implications:
- Cysto-jejunostomy is a viable and effective surgical option for managing traumatic pancreatic pseudocysts.
- Early diagnosis and prompt surgical intervention are crucial for favorable outcomes in traumatic pancreatic pseudocysts.
