Abstract:
In a retrospective study the effectiveness of ultrasound guided percutaneous drainage (n = 36) was compared with that of surgery (n = 38) in the treatment of intraperitoneal abscesses. The treatment was successful in 95% while 5% of the patients in both groups died from progressive septic shock; one complication in each group occurred. There is a significant difference in terms of hospital stay (18 vs. 26 days) that favor the percutaneous treatment.
