Summary

Focusing attention away from pain, not anxiety levels, significantly reduces subjective pain perception. This finding highlights the role of attentional focus in pain modulation for individuals with phobias.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether attentional focus or anxiety levels have a greater influence on pain perception.
  • To differentiate the effects of directing attention towards or away from a pain stimulus under varying anxiety conditions.

Main Methods:

  • A within-subject design was employed with 24 participants diagnosed with spider phobia.
  • Participants received electrical stimulation under four conditions: low/high anxiety combined with attention directed towards or away from the pain.
  • Anxiety was induced via spider exposure; subjective pain ratings and Skin Conductance Responses (SCR) were measured.

Main Results:

  • Subjective pain ratings were consistently lower when attention was directed away from the pain stimulus, irrespective of anxiety level.
  • Initial Skin Conductance Responses (SCR) were higher when attention was distracted from pain compared to attending to it.
  • No significant influence of anxiety on subjective pain ratings or Skin Conductance Responses (SCR) was observed.

Conclusions:

  • Attentional focus, rather than anxiety itself, appears to be the primary modulator of pain perception.
  • Directing attention away from painful stimuli can effectively reduce subjective pain intensity.
  • These findings have implications for non-pharmacological pain management strategies, particularly for phobic individuals.
