Summary

Spinal epidural abscesses (SEA) require prompt diagnosis in patients with spinal pain, neurological deficits, and fever. This study shows that antibiotic treatment alone can successfully resolve SEA in select patients, avoiding surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Neurosurgery

Background:

  • Spinal epidural abscess (SEA) is a rare condition.
  • Early suspicion is crucial for patients presenting with spinal pain, radicular pain, neurological deficits, and fever.
  • Prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent severe outcomes.

Observation:

  • Three patients with SEA (two lumbar, one dorsal) were treated.
  • All patients received exclusively antibiotic therapy.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed the complete resolution of the abscess in all cases.

Findings:

  • SEA can be effectively treated with antibiotics alone in specific cases.
  • Patients with discrete, stable neurological deficits and identified causative microorganisms are candidates for non-surgical management.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Complete abscess resolution was achieved through antibiotic therapy.
  • Implications:

    • Antibiotic therapy may be a viable alternative to surgery for select SEA patients.
    • This approach can lead to favorable outcomes, including complete abscess disappearance.
    • Highlights the importance of considering conservative treatment options in SEA management.
