Summary

Serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels increase with age and prostate volume in men. PSA correlates more strongly with prostate size than age, a key factor for interpreting PSA results in men without cancer symptoms.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Andrology
  • Biochemistry

Background:

  • Serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a biomarker used in prostate health assessment.
  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition affecting aging men.
  • Understanding factors influencing PSA levels is crucial for accurate diagnosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the relationship between serum PSA levels, prostate volume, and age in healthy men.
  • To determine the relative contribution of age and prostate volume to serum PSA levels.
  • To inform the interpretation of PSA values in the absence of clinical signs of prostate cancer.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study of 542 healthy men aged 40-79 years.
  • Data collection included digital rectal examination (DRE), transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS), and serum PSA assay.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Statistical analysis to assess correlations between PSA, age, and prostate volume.
  • Main Results:

    • Mean serum PSA was 1.4 ng/mL, increasing with age and prostate volume.
    • PSA levels correlated modestly with both age and prostate volume.
    • Multivariate analysis showed a stronger correlation between PSA and prostate volume when age was adjusted.

    Conclusions:

    • Serum PSA levels are influenced by both age and prostate volume.
    • Prostate volume is a stronger determinant of serum PSA levels than age.
    • These findings are important for interpreting PSA results in men without clinical evidence of prostate cancer.
