    Area of Science:

    • Urology
    • Surgical Procedures

    Context:

    • Bladder outlet obstruction is a common condition affecting the lower urinary tract.
    • Transurethral operative interventions are standard treatments for bladder neck obstruction.

    Purpose:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of transurethral incision of the bladder neck for primary bladder outlet obstruction.
    • To assess subjective symptom improvement and objective uroflowmetric parameters post-procedure.

    Summary:

    • A study of 61 patients with primary bladder neck obstruction treated with transurethral incision showed subjective improvement in 74% and peak urinary flow exceeding 15 ml/sec in 78%.
    • Repeat procedures were needed in 8.1%, and transurethral resection in 19.6%. Urethral strictures occurred in 13.1% and retrograde ejaculation in 8.5%.

    Impact:

    • Transurethral incision offers a viable treatment option for bladder outlet obstruction with generally positive outcomes.
    • Understanding complication rates, such as strictures and ejaculatory dysfunction, is crucial for patient counseling and surgical planning.
