Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Equine Health
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • A three-year-old pregnant Dutch Warmblood mare presented with a month of weight loss.
  • Clinical signs included ventral edema, enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes, and jejunal wall thickening.

Observation:

  • Hematological evaluation showed leukocytosis and decreased total serum protein and albumin.
  • Necropsy revealed transmural eosinophilic enteritis with macrophages in the small intestine.

Findings:

  • The mare exhibited abnormal glucose absorption (11% increase) in the small intestine.
  • Transmural eosinophilic enteritis was the primary pathological finding.

Implications:

  • This case highlights eosinophilic enteritis as a potential cause of weight loss and malabsorption in horses.
  • Further research into equine eosinophilic enteritis is warranted for improved diagnosis and treatment strategies.
