Background:

  • Behçet's disease is a rare multisystem inflammatory disorder.
  • Hearing loss is a potential complication, but its characteristics and incidence are not well-defined.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of hearing loss in patients with Behçet's disease.
  • To compare audiologic findings between Behçet's disease patients and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Audiologic tests, including pure tone audiometry, were performed on 72 Behçet's disease patients and 72 matched controls.
  • Pure tone audiograms were analyzed to assess hearing thresholds across various frequencies.

Main Results:

  • 27% of Behçet's disease patients exhibited some degree of hearing loss.
  • A statistically significant difference in hearing loss was observed between Behçet's disease patients and controls.
  • Hearing loss was not correlated with disease duration or other systemic involvements but was associated with older age.

Conclusions:

  • Hearing loss is a notable audiological finding in Behçet's disease.
  • Age is a significant factor associated with hearing impairment in this patient population.
