Interferon (IFN) therapy can cause sudden hearing loss and tinnitus in nearly half of patients. Most auditory issues resolve shortly after discontinuing interferon treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Pharmacology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Long-term interferon (IFN) use is associated with various adverse effects.
  • Auditory acuity has been an underrecognized aspect of IFN therapy's side effects.

Observation:

  • A prospective study evaluated auditory function in 73 patients undergoing IFN treatment.
  • Three initial cases of sudden hearing loss linked to IFN prompted the investigation.

Findings:

  • 43.8% of patients experienced auditory disability (tinnitus and/or hearing loss) during IFN therapy.
  • Sensorineural hearing loss was confirmed by audiometry in 36.9% of patients.
  • Both IFN-alpha and IFN-beta showed similar rates of auditory side effects.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Sudden hearing loss is a potential adverse effect of interferon treatment.
  • The findings suggest a possible link between autoimmunity and drug-induced hearing loss.
  • Monitoring auditory function during IFN therapy may be warranted.
