Background:

  • Behçet's disease (BD) is a multisystem inflammatory disorder.
  • Understanding pediatric BD is crucial for early diagnosis and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the clinical manifestations of Behçet's disease in children versus adults.
  • To identify unique features of childhood-onset BD.

Main Methods:

  • Ophthalmic and clinical analysis of 16 children and 122 adults with Behçet's disease.
  • Comparative statistical analysis of disease symptoms and outcomes.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in most symptoms (oral/genital ulcers, skin, arthritis, GI, neuro) between pediatric and adult BD patients.
  • Ocular involvement, including uveitis, cataract, maculopathy, and retinal detachment, was more frequent and severe in children.
  • Thrombophlebitis was more common in adult-onset BD.
  • Male patients (both children and adults) had earlier onset and worse ocular prognosis.

Conclusions:

  • Behçet's disease presents similarly in children and adults regarding most symptoms.
  • Ocular complications in Behçet's disease are particularly severe in childhood.
  • Early-onset and male gender are associated with poorer ocular outcomes in Behçet's disease.
