Management of low HDL cholesterol
1University of Adelaide.
Abstract:
A low concentration of high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol is a powerful predictor of premature coronary heart disease (CHD). This paper presents an overview of the function of HDLs and their relationship with CHD. It summarises conditions in which HDL cholesterol levels are low and discusses the evidence that increasing HDL cholesterol levels may be beneficial. It outlines measures which raise the level of HDL cholesterol and concludes with some practical suggestions for the management of low HDL states.
