    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Psychiatry
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Auditory hallucinations are a common symptom in chronic schizophrenia.
    • The role of endogenous opioids in psychosis remains an area of investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the efficacy of naloxone, a narcotic antagonist, in reducing auditory hallucinations in chronic schizophrenia.

    Main Methods:

    • A double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted.
    • Seven patients with chronic schizophrenia and frequent auditory hallucinations received intravenous naloxone (0.4 mg) or saline placebo.

    Main Results:

    • Naloxone did not demonstrate a significant effect on the frequency or intensity of auditory hallucinations.
    • No significant changes in global psychopathology were observed following naloxone administration.

    Conclusions:

    • Naloxone is not effective in treating auditory hallucinations in chronic schizophrenia.
    • Further research is needed to explore the neurobiological underpinnings of auditory hallucinations.
