Summary

A patient with chronic pain resistant to opioids showed higher levels of morphine-3-glucuronide than morphine-6-glucuronide. This metabolite ratio may explain opioid resistance and guide future pain management strategies.

Area of Science:

  • Pain Management
  • Neuropharmacology
  • Clinical Chemistry

Background:

  • Chronic intractable pain poses significant challenges, often becoming refractory to conventional treatments.
  • Opioid therapy is a cornerstone for pain management, but opioid resistance can limit its efficacy.
  • Morphine metabolism, particularly the ratio of morphine-3-glucuronide (M3G) to morphine-6-glucuronide (M6G), is implicated in analgesic effects and side effects.
