    Summary

Eye bank sclera is a suitable material for reconstructive surgery of the eyelids and orbit. Using fresh donor sclera for orbital implant complications resulted in successful prosthetic fitting and good cosmetic outcomes.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Reconstructive Surgery
    • Biomaterials

    Background:

    • Eye bank sclera is a clinically validated material for structural reconstruction in ocular and orbital procedures.
    • Fresh donor sclera has been utilized in surgical practice since 1970.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of using fresh donor sclera in lid and orbital reconstructive surgery, particularly for managing extruded orbital implants.
    • To assess the timeline for prosthetic fitting and the cosmetic results following such procedures.

    Main Methods:

    • A retrospective review of sixty-four cases involving lid and orbital surgery utilizing fresh donor sclera.
    • Specific analysis of seventeen cases managed for extruding or extruded orbital implants.

    Main Results:

    • The overall complication rate in the series was low.
    • In the seventeen cases of extruded orbital implants, only two complications occurred, both of which were easily managed.
    • Successful prosthetic fitting was achieved within six weeks post-surgery in all cases.

    Conclusions:

    • Fresh donor sclera is a safe and effective material for orbital reconstructive surgery, including the management of complications like extruded implants.
    • The use of eye bank sclera facilitates timely prosthetic rehabilitation and achieves excellent cosmetic results.
