Summary

Aortic arch surgery significantly depresses cellular immunity, particularly interleukin-2 (IL-2) production and natural killer (NK) cell activity, increasing infection risk. This immune dysfunction may stem from massive blood transfusions and hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass.
