    Background:

    • Atopic allergy is characterized by hypersensitivity to environmental allergens.
    • The role of circulating immune complexes (CICs) in atopic conditions requires further elucidation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and characteristics of CICs in patients with atopic allergy.
    • To assess the impact of long-term immunotherapy on CIC levels.

    Main Methods:

    • Quantitative Clq assay used to measure CICs in patient sera.
    • Ultracentrifugation on sucrose density gradients to fractionate CICs.
    • Comparison of CIC levels between atopic patients and healthy controls.

    Main Results:

    • Atopic patients exhibited significantly higher mean Clq reactive material (CICs) than normal individuals.
    • Patients undergoing long-term immunotherapy (≥5 years) showed the highest CIC levels.
    • Fractionation revealed CICs in intermediate (7S-19S) and heavy (>19S) regions, with heavy complexes containing IgM and IgG.

    Conclusions:

    • Elevated CICs are present in atopic allergy patients.
    • Long-term immunotherapy may be associated with increased CIC formation.
    • These CICs, particularly IgG-containing complexes, may play a role in the "blocking action" observed in immunotherapy.
