Summary

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) patients showed low rates of personality disorders, similar to other anxiety disorder patients. This challenges previous findings and suggests state-trait confounding may be a factor.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Mental Health Research

Background:

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often studied alongside other anxiety disorders.
  • Previous research suggested a higher comorbidity of personality disorders in OCD patients.
  • Understanding Axis II pathology is crucial for comprehensive patient assessment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the prevalence of Axis II personality pathology in patients with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) versus other anxiety disorders.
  • To investigate potential discrepancies with prior research on personality disorder diagnoses in OCD.

Main Methods:

  • Administered the Personality Disorder Examination to a sample of 258 anxiety disorder patients.
  • Included patients diagnosed with OCD and other anxiety disorders as controls.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Analyzed diagnostic rates for personality disorders across different anxiety disorder groups.
  • Main Results:

    • A low rate of personality disorder diagnoses was observed in the OCD patient sample.
    • The control group of other anxiety disorder patients also exhibited low rates of personality disorders.
    • These findings contrast with some recent reports in the literature.

    Conclusions:

    • The study suggests a lower comorbidity of personality disorders in OCD than previously reported.
    • The observed low rates may be influenced by state-trait confounding.
    • Further research is needed to clarify the relationship between OCD, anxiety disorders, and personality pathology.
