Sexual dysfunction is common in multiple sclerosis (MS). This longitudinal study found that the risk of sexual dysfunction significantly increases over time in both men and women with MS.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Sexual Medicine
  • Clinical Research

Background:

  • Sexual dysfunction is a recognized complication of multiple sclerosis (MS).
  • Understanding the progression of sexual dysfunction in MS is crucial for patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To longitudinally assess changes in sexual function and symptoms in patients with definite multiple sclerosis.
  • To identify trends in sexual dysfunction over a 5-year period within an MS cohort.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 49 patients (27 female, 22 male) with definite MS underwent interviews and examinations.
  • Data were collected at baseline and after a 5-year interval to track changes in sexual function.

Main Results:

  • A significant increase in the prevalence of sexual dysfunction was observed over 5 years (p = 0.009).

Related Experiment Videos

  • The increase in sexual dysfunction affected both females and males equally.
  • Females with MS were more likely to experience multiple symptoms of sexual dysfunction compared to males.
  • Conclusions:

    • The risk of developing sexual dysfunction escalates with time in individuals with multiple sclerosis.
    • Further research into effective treatment strategies for MS-related sexual dysfunction is warranted.
