Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the oculometric characteristics of adult-onset myopia.
  • To compare adult-onset myopia with early-onset myopia.
  • To determine the underlying mechanisms of myopia development in adulthood.

Main Methods:

  • Ultrasound eye measurements and keratometry were used.
  • 33 subjects with adult-onset myopia (onset 18-50 years) were compared with 30 subjects with early-onset myopia (onset 4-16 years).
  • Subjects with cataract and corneal pathology were excluded.

Main Results:

  • Adult-onset myopia showed lower refractive error (mean -3.24 D) compared to early-onset myopia (mean -4.91 D), but high myopia was present in both groups.
  • Axial elongation was the primary oculometric finding in both adult-onset and early-onset myopia.
  • Eyes in the early-onset group were larger (axial length, vitreous length, mid-lens depth) than in the adult-onset group.

Conclusions:

  • Adult-onset myopia is primarily axial in nature, similar to early-onset myopia.
  • The findings support the hypothesis that ocular growth can resume in adulthood.
  • The eye possesses a latent potential for growth, even beyond the typical cessation of ocular development in adolescence.
