Summary

Neonatal meningitis survival improved with aminoglycosides but caused neurological issues. Breastfeeding and avoiding heat-sterilizing breast milk are recommended to reduce incidence and preserve protective immunoglobulin A.

To evaluate the outcomes of neonatal meningitis treatment.
To identify strategies for reducing neonatal meningitis incidence and severity.

Retrospective study analyzing 6 years of neonatal meningitis cases (1970-1975).

Increased survival rates observed with aminoglycoside use.
Survivors experienced a higher incidence of major neurological sequelae.
Breast milk contains anti-Escherichia coli immunoglobulin A, crucial for infant immunity.
