Present prognosis in neonatal meningitis

B R Lewis, J M Gupta

    The Medical Journal of Australia
    |May 7, 1977
    PubMed
    Summary

Neonatal meningitis survival improved with aminoglycosides but caused neurological issues. Breastfeeding and avoiding heat-sterilizing breast milk are recommended to reduce incidence and preserve protective immunoglobulin A.

    Area of Science:

    • Neonatal Medicine
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Pediatric Neurology

    Background:

    • Neonatal meningitis poses significant risks to infant health.
    • Aminoglycoside antibiotics have been used to treat neonatal meningitis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the outcomes of neonatal meningitis treatment.
    • To identify strategies for reducing neonatal meningitis incidence and severity.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective study analyzing 6 years of neonatal meningitis cases (1970-1975).

    Main Results:

    • Increased survival rates observed with aminoglycoside use.
    • Survivors experienced a higher incidence of major neurological sequelae.
    • Breast milk contains anti-Escherichia coli immunoglobulin A, crucial for infant immunity.

    Conclusions:

    • Breastfeeding is suggested to decrease neonatal meningitis incidence.
    • Heat-sterilization of pooled human breast milk should be avoided to preserve its immunological properties.
