Background:

The 2:1 student-clinical instructor (CI) model is an emerging approach in clinical education.
Understanding its dynamics is crucial for effective implementation.
Existing literature provides a foundation for exploring this model.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore the 2:1 student-CI model of clinical education.
To identify factors promoting successful 2:1 clinical education experiences.
To identify factors interfering with a successful 2:1 clinical education experience.

Main Methods:

Descriptive qualitative field study.
Purposive sample of three CIs and six students.
Data collection via observation, student journals, and postexperience interviews.

Main Results:

Descriptions of a typical day in the 2:1 model.
Identified themes: communication, advantages, and disadvantages.
Development of a new conceptual model for the 2:1 clinical education experience.

Conclusions:

The study describes the 2:1 student-CI experience.
Identifies critical factors for the model's success.
Offers practical suggestions for implementing the 2:1 model.
