Summary

This study validates a new MRI technique for mapping tissue sodium concentration (TSC) in the brain. The non-invasive MRI method accurately reflects sodium levels compared to traditional radionuclide techniques.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Neuroscience
  • Biophysics

Background:

  • Accurate measurement of tissue sodium concentration (TSC) is crucial for understanding brain function and disease.
  • Current methods for TSC measurement are often invasive or lack spatial resolution.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantitatively map tissue sodium concentration (TSC) in the normal rat brain using a novel in vivo MRI method.
  • To validate the accuracy of the MRI technique by comparing its results to the established 22Na radionuclide dilutional technique.

Main Methods:

  • A three-dimensional projectional MRI acquisition scheme was employed to minimize signal loss.
  • Internal calibration standards and a ratio of 23Na and 1H images were used for signal intensity conversion and B1 inhomogeneity correction.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The MRI-derived TSC was compared with results from the invasive 22Na radionuclide dilutional method.
  • Main Results:

    • The MRI method demonstrated a linear response of TSC with concentration over the biological range.
    • No significant difference was found between the mean TSC measured by MRI (45 ± 4 mM) and the radionuclide method (49 ± 6 mM) in the normal rat brain.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed quantitative in vivo MRI method provides accurate and non-invasive mapping of tissue sodium concentration (TSC) in the brain.
    • This MRI technique offers a viable alternative to invasive methods for TSC assessment in neuroscience research.
