Familial factors increase the risk for degenerative disc disease. Relatives of patients with degenerative disc disease were more likely to have a family history of spinal issues and surgery.

Background:

  • Degenerative disc disease (DDD) risk factors include smoking and occupational hazards.
  • The potential role of familial predisposition in DDD development is not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether familial factors contribute to the risk of developing lumbar degenerative disc disease.
  • To determine if relatives of patients undergoing surgery for DDD are at higher risk for lower back pain or sciatica.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study compared relatives of 65 patients with lumbar DDD surgery to 67 controls undergoing non-spine orthopedic procedures.
  • Standardized questionnaires and interviews were administered by a single observer to all participants.
