Summary

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC), a rare skin cancer, can occur on the penis. This report details a case of multiple penile BCCs exhibiting eccrine differentiation, a feature not previously documented in penile BCC.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common malignant skin tumor, typically found on sun-exposed areas like the head and neck.
  • Penile BCC is exceptionally rare, with only 17 cases documented in medical literature.
  • Eccrine differentiation is a recognized feature in some BCCs but has not been previously reported in penile BCC.

Observation:

  • A 75-year-old male presented with multiple instances of basal cell carcinoma on the penis.
  • Histological examination revealed features suggestive of eccrine differentiation within the penile BCCs.
  • This finding is novel as eccrine differentiation has not been previously associated with penile BCC.

Findings:

  • The study reports the first documented cases of penile basal cell carcinoma with histological evidence of eccrine differentiation.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Multiple BCCs were observed in the patient, highlighting a potentially unusual presentation.
  • The presence of eccrine differentiation in penile BCC expands the known histological spectrum of this rare tumor.
  • Implications:

    • This case expands the understanding of basal cell carcinoma's histological variability, even in rare locations like the penis.
    • Recognizing eccrine differentiation in penile BCC may influence diagnostic and potentially therapeutic considerations.
    • Further research is warranted to explore the frequency and significance of eccrine differentiation in penile basal cell carcinoma.
