Summary

Digital voice recognition (DVR) shows a learning curve, reducing dictation time with practice. However, DVR remains strenuous for users and increases pathologist time fourfold compared to traditional methods.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the performance of a commercial digital voice recognition system in free text dictation.
  • To compare the time efficiency and user strain of DVR versus traditional dictation methods.

  • Six individuals dictated a 182-word medical text four times using a commercial DVR system.
  • Dictation and correction times were recorded for each session.
  • Comparison with dictaphone dictation and subsequent typing/correction time.

  • While overall time may be comparable, DVR significantly increases pathologist workload.
  • Template modules are essential for achieving acceptable input speeds with DVR systems.
