Background:

  • The Hering-Breuer reflex is a key respiratory control mechanism.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if intermittent positive pressure ventilation (IPPV) provokes the Hering-Breuer reflex in children.
  • To determine if reflex strength correlates with pediatric age and respiratory system compliance (CRS).

Main Methods:

  • Recorded airflow, volume, and airway pressure during IPPV in 20 children.
  • Calculated expiratory times (Te1, Te2) and CRS.
  • Assessed reflex presence (Te2 > Te1) and strength (% difference).

Main Results:

  • The Hering-Breuer reflex was provoked in 19 out of 20 pediatric patients.
  • Reflex strength showed a significant inverse relationship with postnatal age (r = -0.73).
  • No significant correlation was found between reflex strength and CRS or inflation volume.

  • The Hering-Breuer reflex is indeed provoked by IPPV in young children.
  • Further research is needed to understand its influence on ventilation efficacy in this population, similar to neonates.
