Summary

Cerebral irradiation can lead to hemorrhagic dysangiogenesis, mimicking vascular malformations. Children undergoing brain radiation are particularly at risk for this serious complication.

Background:

Observation:

  • This study investigated five patients who developed occult cerebrovascular malformations after cerebral irradiation.
  • Lesions appeared 3-9 years post-irradiation, predominantly in young females, and presented with acute neurological symptoms.

Findings:

  • Magnetic resonance imaging revealed characteristic signal changes over time.
  • Histopathology showed cavernous malformation-like vascular spaces, thrombosed veins, and hemosiderin deposition.
