Summary

Interleukin 2 (IL-2) cancer therapy increases nitric oxide (NO) levels, leading to hypotension in patients. Monitoring plasma nitrate and nitrite can predict vascular effects but not cardiac toxicity from IL-2 treatment.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate plasma nitric oxide (NO) level changes during continuous intravenous infusion (CIVI) of IL-2 in advanced cancer patients.
  • To correlate plasma NO levels with cardiovascular side effects, specifically hypotension and cardiac toxicity.
  • To assess the dose-dependent pattern and cumulative effects of IL-2 on NO production.

Main Methods:

  • Ten advanced cancer patients received IL-2 (9 or 18 MIU m-2 day-1) via CIVI for 96 hours, repeated every 3 weeks.
