Catalepsy tests: what do they tell us?

A M Weitzenhoffer

    Summary

Most clinicians use catalepsy tests, but only one of three is a potentially valid measure of hypnosis. This test requires significant improvements to be truly useful for identifying hypnosis.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychology
    • Clinical Hypnosis Research

    Background:

    • Catalepsy tests are frequently used by clinicians to identify hypnosis.
    • Catalepsy may be an indicator for up to eight other signs of hypnosis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the reliability and validity of commonly used catalepsy tests.
    • To determine the suitability of catalepsy tests as indicators of hypnosis.

    Main Methods:

    • Survey of 200 clinicians on their use of catalepsy tests.
    • Evaluation of the scientific rigor of three distinct catalepsy tests.

    Main Results:

    • Three-fourths of surveyed clinicians reported using catalepsy tests.
    • Only one of the three evaluated catalepsy tests shows potential as a valid measure of hypnosis.
    • This single promising test exhibits significant weaknesses requiring remediation.

    Conclusions:

    • While catalepsy tests are widely adopted, their current scientific validity for assessing hypnosis is questionable.
    • Further refinement of the most promising catalepsy test is essential for its reliable application in clinical hypnosis research.
