Area of Science:

  • Sleep Medicine
  • Neurology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Headache is a common symptom with various potential causes.
  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is a prevalent sleep disorder.
  • The relationship between snoring, OSAS, and headache requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess and compare headache prevalence in the general population versus patients with snoring and OSAS.
  • To identify specific headache patterns associated with snoring and OSAS.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving adults aged 30-64 in Kopparberg county, Sweden.
  • Included patients diagnosed with snoring (n=448) or OSAS (n=324) and a general population sample (n=583).
  • Utilized questionnaires and sleep apnea screening for diagnosis and data collection.

Main Results:

  • Headache prevalence was higher in heavy snorers and OSAS patients compared to controls.
  • Morning headaches were at least three times more common in heavy snorers and OSAS patients.
  • 18% of heavy snorers and OSAS patients reported frequent morning headaches, versus 5% in the general population.

Conclusions:

  • Headache, especially morning headache, is a common comorbidity in individuals with snoring and OSAS.
  • Findings suggest a strong link between sleep-disordered breathing and headache experiences.
  • Further research into the underlying mechanisms and clinical implications is warranted.
