Summary

Ultrasonography accurately measures equine superficial digital flexor tendon cross-sectional area (CSA) in vivo and in vitro. This noninvasive technique correlates well with traditional ink-blot analysis for equine tendon assessment.

Background:

  • Accurate measurement of equine superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) cross-sectional area (CSA) is crucial for diagnosing and managing tendon injuries.
  • Traditional methods like ink-blot analysis are invasive and may not reflect in vivo conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the feasibility of ultrasonography for measuring SDFT CSA in live horses (in vivo) and post-mortem (in vitro).
  • To compare ultrasonographic CSA measurements with a traditional ink-blot analysis method.
