Summary

Intrathecal methotrexate (ITMTX) chemotherapy, used to prevent central nervous system involvement in lymphoma patients, did not cause immediate changes in nerve conduction or motor neuron function. This study assessed electrophysiological parameters before and after ITMTX administration.

Background:

  • High-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphomas require chemotherapy, including intrathecal administration to prevent central nervous system (CNS) involvement.
  • Intrathecal methotrexate (ITMTX) is a common agent used for CNS prophylaxis.
  • Potential neurotoxicity of ITMTX necessitates careful monitoring of neurological function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the immediate effects of single-dose intrathecal methotrexate (ITMTX) and prednisolone on peripheral nerve and motor neuron function.
  • To assess changes in nerve conduction velocity, F-wave parameters, and motor neuron excitability following ITMTX administration in lymphoma patients.

Main Methods:

  • Electrophysiological examinations were performed on 20 high-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma patients (aged 40-71).

    • Electrophysiological monitoring did not reveal immediate neurotoxic effects of ITMTX in this patient cohort.
    • Further studies are warranted to assess long-term neurophysiological effects of ITMTX in lymphoma treatment.
