Background:

The critical shortage of donor organs necessitates understanding healthcare professionals' roles in organ retrieval.
This study investigates Illinois family physicians' advisory capacity regarding cadaveric organ donation.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess Illinois family physicians' beliefs and patient communication strategies concerning cadaveric organ donation.
To identify barriers and facilitators for effective patient counseling on organ donation.

Main Methods:

A survey was distributed to 500 randomly selected Illinois Academy of Family Physicians members.
Usable responses were collected from 272 physicians, representing a 54.4% response rate.

Main Results:

A significant majority (67%) of physicians believe patients' donation wishes should be honored over family objections.
However, most physicians (81%) only advise signing driver's license donor cards and (57%) discussing with family, methods insufficient to guarantee donation.
Few physicians (not specified) recommend health care powers of attorney, a crucial tool for ensuring patient autonomy.

Conclusions:

Family physicians can enhance patient support for organ donation by becoming more knowledgeable about and discussing health care powers of attorney.
Integrating discussions about health care powers of attorney into patient consultations is vital for respecting individuals' end-of-life wishes.
