[Hepatic insufficiency - clinical picture]

M Schmid

    Leber, Magen, Darm
    |August 1, 1977

    Summary

Hepatic insufficiency, a severe liver problem, poorly correlates with lab tests and biopsies. Measuring coagulation factors is the best way to predict outcomes in liver failure.

    Area of Science:

    • Hepatology
    • Internal Medicine
    • Pathophysiology

    Context:

    • Hepatic insufficiency arises from severe liver cell dysfunction.
    • It can be acute, often seen in viral hepatitis or toxic liver damage, or chronic, typical in advanced cirrhosis.

    Purpose:

    • To discuss the pathophysiology and clinical presentation of hepatic insufficiency.
    • To evaluate the correlation between clinical findings, laboratory data, and biopsy results.
    • To identify the best prognostic parameter for hepatic failure.

    Summary:

    • Clinical manifestations of hepatic insufficiency often correlate poorly with laboratory results, with the weakest correlation observed between clinical signs and biopsy findings.
    • Acute hepatic insufficiency is commonly associated with severe viral hepatitis and toxic liver damage.
    • Chronic hepatic insufficiency is characteristic of the end stages of liver cirrhosis.

    Impact:

    • Highlights the diagnostic challenges in hepatic insufficiency due to poor clinical-laboratory correlation.
    • Identifies coagulation factor measurement as a critical prognostic tool for hepatic failure.
    • Emphasizes the need for accurate prognostic indicators in managing liver disease.
