Summary

Persistent anaphylactoid shock from contrast media is rare but can occur in patients taking beta-blockers. Glucagon administration showed significant improvement, suggesting its potential as a life-saving treatment in such cases.

Observation:

  • A case of refractory anaphylactoid shock during coronary angiography in a patient on beta-blockers is presented.
  • The patient was unresponsive to aggressive standard therapy for the shock.

Findings:

  • Glucagon administration resulted in significant clinical improvement.
  • This suggests glucagon may be an effective treatment for refractory anaphylactoid shock in patients on beta-blockers.

Implications:

  • Clinicians should consider this rare complication in patients undergoing procedures with contrast media while on beta-blockers.
