Topical mitomycin-C (MMC) did not significantly prevent restrictive scar tissue in a rabbit strabismus model. Longer exposure to MMC caused orbital inflammation and fibrosis, indicating further research is needed for safe delivery.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Ophthalmic Surgery
- Animal Models
Background:
- Restrictive strabismus, similar to human fat adherence syndrome, can impair ocular motility.
- Preventing restrictive scar tissue formation is crucial in ophthalmic surgery.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy of topical intraoperative mitomycin-C (MMC) in preventing restrictive scar tissue.
- To assess the safety and potential side effects of topical MMC in an animal model.
Main Methods:
- An animal model of restrictive strabismus was created in rabbits.
- Passive forced ductions were measured before and after treatment.
- Eyes were treated with topical MMC or sterile water, followed by histopathologic examination.
Main Results:
- Significant motility restriction developed in control eyes.
- Topical MMC did not significantly reduce scar tissue formation compared to controls.
- Longer MMC exposure resulted in orbital inflammation and fibrosis.
Conclusions:
- Topical intraoperative MMC was not effective in preventing restrictive scar tissue in this model.
- High concentrations or prolonged exposure to MMC can cause adverse effects.
- Further investigation is required to determine safe and effective delivery methods for MMC in treating fat adherence syndrome.
