Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Endocrinology
  • Gynecologic Oncology

Background:

  • Case reports suggest a link between ovulation induction agents and ovarian tumors.
  • This has caused significant public and media attention.
  • Studies have reported associations with various ovarian cancer types.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the existing literature on fertility drugs and ovarian tumor risk.
  • To assess the evidence for a causal relationship.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of studies investigating fertility drugs and ovarian cancer.
  • Analysis of reported associations and study limitations.

Main Results:

  • Several studies report an increased risk of ovarian tumors, including malignant epithelial ovarian cancer, borderline epithelial ovarian tumors, and nonepithelial ovarian cancer.
  • Limitations in current research hinder definitive conclusions.

Conclusions:

  • While an association has been reported, current evidence is insufficient to establish a causal relationship between fertility drugs and ovarian cancer.
  • Further rigorous research is required to clarify this potential risk.
